Who Am I?

Tanya R. Sorrell, PhD, NP-C has been a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner for over 10 years. She has a Master's Degree in Nursing, graduating first in her class of 225 students from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. While there she specialized in Minority and International Mental Health. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Psychiatric Mental- Health Nurse Practitioner. 

She recently completed doctoral studies in Mental Health of Vulnerable Populations and US/Mexico Border Mental Health. Her focus was on mental health services in the vulnerable population living along the US-Mexico border. She intends to use this knowledge to add more culturally relevant mental health services for minorities to the current mental health system. Her dissertation was titled "Mental Health Treatment Preferences for Persons of Mexican Heritage.

Tanya has studied International Mental Health issues and as part of her training worked in Mental Health facilities in England and Mexico. Tanya has traveled to almost every continent to study issues related to mental health care, especially pertaining to minorities. She has worked in refugee mental health missions in China and Thailand and with Indigenous groups in Australia/New Zeeland and Uruguay. In 2008, she traveled to the Dominican Republic and Haiti as part of her ongoing quest in understanding and treating the mental health needs of differing cultures.

In addition to her work with clinical outpatients, she has developed a mental health non-profit organization, Vida sin Limites – A Life Unlimited, Inc. for the development of clinical, educational, and research services in mental health for the population living along the US-Mexico border. Tanya speaks Spanish and French, and enjoys music, skiing, travel and raising AKC champion dogs.
