Medically Supervised Weight Management Programs

Yuma Mental Health & Wellness Center is pleased to announce the development of TWO medically supervised weight management programs as part of its full array of services to improve your health, lifestyle and wellbeing. Weight issues including overweight (having a BMI over 25) and obesity (having a BMI over 30), are a growing concern for US citizens. Obesity is calculated from a person's weight and height and gives an indication of their overall health status and risk of potential health problems, such as hypertension, depression, diabetes and heart disease. Currently, almost 75% of the US population is overweight with over 24% of the population considered obese. Surprisingly, more people in the US are obese than overweight, highlighting the increasing risk of mood and health issues to the population (Reuters, 2009). Minorities are particularly susceptible to weight gain and its medical complications with over 80% of Mexican-Americans and African-Americans considered overweight or obese (Reuters, 2007). According to the CDC, in Arizona 25% of residents are obese, with Yuma, AZ qualifying as the 2nd fattest city in the US, with over 67% of all Yuma residents categorized as overweight or obese. In one study, activity levels of Yuma residents were seen as part of the weight gain pattern, with 29% of residents stating they lead sedentary lifestyles (Banner, 2008).

Understanding that obesity is a growing concern and negatively affects a person's physical and mental health, Yuma Mental Health & Wellness Center will be providing services to assist you in making the diet and lifestyle changes needed to improve your weight, self-esteem, and longevity for a lifetime of increased health and wellness. Weight management assistance provided by a medically supervised program including diet modification, nutrition and exercise education, counseling, and emotional support increases the likelihood of a person actually making changes in their diet and exercise/activity patterns to provide for lasting lifestyle and health changes.
